PayPal is an American company that operates a worldwide online payment system, which is utilized by corporations and organizations such as eBay, Walmart, and Barnes and Noble. PayPal advertises itself as “shopping without borders”, with alliances with millions of other websites in over 200 markets with over 346 million customers and counting, making orders either off of their laptops or iPhones. However, despite their more well-known connections, also helps out small and upcoming businesses through the PayPal Commerce Platform. With this platform, PayPal helps establish a foundation for their client’s business, from the payment system to fraud detection while still respecting the client’s independence.
Originally, PayPal was founded as Confinity with the idea of creating an easy-going digital payment system for individuals and companies for lower costs. Confinity was founded in August 1998 by a couple of young technology entrepreneurs in Mount View, California; Peter Thiel and Max Levchin. Two years afterward, the company was renamed to the PayPal we know once they reached the million customer mark. A year later, their company was already three billion dollars in payments made by 10.2 million customers. Yet, it was in October 2002 that PayPal made their most significant business decision by selling to eBay, propelling their profits further and expanding their potential horizon for new alliances. More recently, PayPal purchased the payment gateway company of Braintree Systems, (owned by Venmo).
From the statistics on My Visa Jobs, nearly three-thousand H1B job applications have been filed to PayPal over the past fiscal year. The most highly sought after job occupations at PayPal involve positions involving software, mainly as a Software and MTS Software Engineer. The difference between these two positions is thin in qualification, but broad in duty. As a Software Engineer, an employee is given the task of converting business data and requirements into software. MTS is a recent contraction of an unofficial title supposedly tossed around Silicon Valley-type offices, standing for “member of technical staff”. Basically, “MTS” are senior software engineers that operate on multiple tasks outside the typical software development, but also working with hardware and program scripting. Although both require similar backgrounds and familiarity with software technology and development, there is a drastic difference in salaries with normal Software Engineers making $138,000 on average while the MTS workers can make $173,000 on average.
Other highly sought after jobs with MTS include Risk Analysis and Data Science. As a Risk Analyst, an employee processes possible risks that may occur by condensing known data stemming from corporate, government, and environmental circles. Many define risk analysis as more of an art than a true business science, but this kind of career not only requires a strong sense of intuition but a deep knowledge of statistics and knowledge of how to process such high numbers that may affect a company. Similarly, a Data Scientist must also process data for the sake of business decision-making as well, but more so from the digital front. Both careers require a background in statistics and have base salaries of $120,000 (Risk Analyst) and $147,150 (Data Scientist).
Back when it was known as Confinity, the worldwide payment system was founded on the idea of creating an efficient, low-cost system that reached every corner of the globe. This requires a great deal of constant software tinkering in order for the company’s renowned payment platform to run as quickly and effectively as it has. This not only streamlines account and payment data, but also buffers security against hacking and frauds. PayPal has been subject to massive phishing scams as recent as this year, causing clients to suffer and lose faith with the company’s stated promise of consumer security.
As for Risk Analyst and Data Scientists, PayPal has begun to branch out and either buy up failing companies or creating subsidiaries. This would mean the movement of a lot of money and resources. Before making such a decision, PayPal would probably consult their Risk Analysts to see if such deals are wise moves for the company to make and walk away with satisfactory benefit. This would also lead to a massive surge of new data that would have to be organized and packaged in their records for further business deals and decisions.
PayPal is one of the top H1B employers in America, but this has drawn some criticism stating that the company is H1B dependent. Recently, like many other companies PayPal has taken some setback from the recent work visa ban made via the Trump administration. In this bid to open more opportunity for domestic hires, this national business decision drew the ire of many corporate heads. Current PayPal CEO Dan Schulman also put out a statement on LinkedIn in response to this stating that by “Creating new restrictions for immigrants who seek to work in the US is disappointing - and will slow our progress as a nation“.
It appears in response to these criticisms, PayPal announced the “PayPal India Campus Challenge”. This program has been set up for graduating engineer students who are looking to work at and provide their ideas to PayPal’s network. The registration date recently passed, but Internships and full-time positions will start up in June 2021, perhaps heralding another wave of H1B workers.
